Rakel's inquiry questions

What have we noticed about introduced predators in our green space? They are destroying our environment. Devouring the new growth leaves on our native trees which causes them to die or in other words become extinct. If there is no trees left in new zealand that means we have no more oxygen.

What we know already about introduced predators: they eat our fruit and flowers that our insects and native creatures need to live or survive and there were be less food for the insects and creatures. They eat some of our native creatures which means that we will have less native creatures in nz.The possums breed lots 2 babies is one year and they will get more and more which causes them to eat more and more.

Our prediction about introduced predators is: introduced predators are bad to our environment because they devour the new growth leaves off our native trees which causes the trees to die or in other words become extinct and if they become extinct that means we have no more oxygen. The pests eat our fruit and flowers which causes our native animals to have less food and they can’t pollinate.

What do we wonder about introduced predators? What they are capable of and if they do anything else in the night time like if they eat more new growth leaves from trees and more fruits and flowers.

How can we help get rid of pests? We could place more traps down in the forest so that the traps can kill the pests and make them become extinct. another idea the fur industry can send more hunters to hunt them and kill them for their fur.hire people could get money/ching ching and kill them for more ching ching.

How can we find out the answer to this question? We could read some news articles or read some reading slips that tells you information about pests and what is going on to them. Or our school can bring a nz pest trap setter like that zoo guy that came to our school. We could also put cameras up in the woods let it vidoe for a couple days and then watch the footage.

When did possum arrive in New Zealand? Possum arrived in 1837.

Who introduced possums to New Zealand? The early
british settlers introduced possums to New Zealand.

Why is this a problem? Because if possum keep on eating our native creatures, animals, insects and also trees then there will be no more of those things in New Zealand.

When did possum become a problem? When they started eating the native creatures, animals, insects and also trees.

Why did they bring possums here in the first place? Because they wanted to hunt them for their fur and start a fur industry.

How could this be so harmful? One because if they kill all the trees in New Zealand we will have no more oxygen because trees give us oxygen.

Can you defend the action of the people that introduced the possums to New Zealand? No, because it was a bad idea to bring possums to New Zealand but they did not know that.

How could we solve this problem?
Keep on hunting them or hire more people to hunt them.

Identify the three ways that have been identified in the text of how to get rid of this pest? Hunt them for their fur, poison and also traps.

Rakel's writing explanation about possums

Possums the problem.

A possum is a pest that was shipped from Australia to New Zealand
by the early British settlers in 1837. They thought it was a great idea
to ship possums from Australia to New Zealand because they could
get money from making a fur industry to sell their fur for more money.
In my writing, I will be explaining how possums are changing our forest.
Firstly they devour the new growth leaves of our native trees, secondly,
they devour the fruits and flowers, thirdly they eat our native creatures,
and lastly, they devour our native creatures eggs.

First possums are changing our beautiful green forest by eating the
new
growth leaves which causes our trees to die including our native
New Zealand trees such as pohutukawa, kauri, rata and also kowhai
and if there are no trees that mean we have no oxygen.

Secondly, they devour our fruit and flowers which means there will be
less food for our native creatures and insects which they need to
survive
on and maybe they might become extinct.

Thirdly they eat our native creatures and insects which means they
cannot pollinate or reduce food supply and they could become extinct.

And lastly, they also eat our native creatures eggs which might cause
them to become extinct and have no more native New Zealand animals,
creatures or insects. Because they are growing at a faster rate every
year. The more they eat would cause these native birds to go extinct.

Possums are destroying our environment by killing our native trees
and creatures, animals and also insects. We need to find a way to
help get rid of this pest from changing our environment. As you can
see the diagram below everything works together but now possums
come in and are disrupting our ecosystem.

Rakel treaty questions

What is the word treaty? Treaty is an agreement between two or more countries or people.

Why was the treaty needed? The treaty was made to stop intertribal warfare. They also believed it would make trades easier and fairer for maori and pakeha.

What does it say? It say that the maori chiefs would have to agree to give up their “sovereignty” to the queen of england.

Rakel's reading questions

What is the story about?

The signing of the found document between the queen of England and more than 500 maori chiefs.

Why did the author write this story? Why do you think that? I think Ross Calman wrote the story because we celebrate waitangi day every year.

What were the main idea(s) of what you read? What were the supporting details that told you more about the main idea? Signing the founding document.

What did you find interesting as you were reading today? I found some interesting words.

Did you find any interesting while you were reading? What was it? Use a dictionary to find out its meaning and write a sentence of your own using the interesting word you found?

Unruly: david was being unruly. Empire:

british ruled over and empire.

Colonisation: the queen of england did a colonisation.
